Wagner Sets Four Pool Records in Win Over LIU Post

STATEN ISLAND, New York, October 6. THE Wagner Seahawks set four new pool records en route to their first victory of the season over LIU Post on Saturday afternoon.

The Wagner women’s swimming & diving team captured their first victory of the 2013-2014 season with a 152-106 win over LIU Post.

Wagner began the day with second and third place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, as the lineup of freshman Anu Nihipali, senior Kelsey Thomas, senior Meredith Ketchmark, and senior Sarah Menendez missed out on gold by a mere .04 seconds.

The Seahawks dominated the 1000-yard freestyle, earning a 1-2-3 finish behind newcomer Grace Baird, and seniors Alexandra Cooney and Kristiana Kalibat. Baird also earned first place in the 500-yard freestyle event, while Cooney earned third.

Seniors Ketchmark and Menendez took first and third in the 200-yard freestyle. Ketchmark also won the 100-yard freestyle, breaking the previous record set in the event by .02 of a second with a time of 53.10.

Nihipali made a splash in her individual event debut, finishing the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.41, crushing the previous school record by 2.49 seconds, effectively also breaking the pool record. Nihipali also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle before taking home the gold in the 200-yard individual medley (IM).

Following in her teammate’s record-breaking footsteps, fellow freshman Katja Claesson took gold in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.25, breaking the previous record of 1:07.75 in the process. Junior Michelle Greenough and Thomas rounded out the event with a 2-3 finish. In addition to the points they earned in the 100-yard breaststroke, Thomas earned a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Claesson placed second.

Sophomores Amanda Lucia finished second in the 200-yard butterfly, and Erin Malone took third. Fellow sophomore Kaitlin Murtha took home fourth place. Lucia and Malone also earned second and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly event, respectfully, while junior Sam Sides earned third. Menendez earned silver in the 50-yard freestyle, and sophomore Corinne Rondina seized third.

Sophomore Kara Lacoste earned a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke events, while junior Morgan Stoner earned the bronze in the 200-yard backstroke. Murtha earned fourth in the event. Sophomore Megan Mendez also contributed to the Wagner victory, with a third-place finish in the 200-yard IM and a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

In the final event, the assembly of Menendez, Sides, Rondina, and Ketchmark controlled the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in with a 1:38.47. With that time, Wagner broke their fourth record of the day by an assertive 1.26 seconds.

The Green & White return to the pool on Friday, October 11th, when they head to Manhattan College. The meet is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

The LIU Post women’s swimming team opened up its 2013-14 campaign with a 152-106 loss to Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y. The Pioneers picked up first-place wins in six of 14 events on the day.

Two of the LIU Post relay squads grabbed first-place finishes on the afternoon. In the 200-yard medley relay, the Pioneer ‘A’ team slapped the wall after 1:48.08 had passed to finish first. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the ‘A’ team of Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada), Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.), Seren Jones (London, England, United Kingdom), and Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) got a first-place finish with a finishing time of 1:39.99, and the ‘B’ team of Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden), Kirsty Elliott (Edinburg, Scotland), and Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) finished in second with a time of 1:45.12.

Sophomore Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) secured two individual first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Both her times in the 100-yard (56.20) and 200-yard fly (2:03.78) were good enough for NCAA “B” cut standards. Kwok also finished with a time of 2:11.69 in the 200-yard individual medley, good for second in the event.

Sophomore Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) registered a win in the 50-yard freestyle, slapping the wall after 24.86 seconds had passed. The final Pioneer victory came from Johanna Pettersson (Kunglav, Sweden)b, as she finished with a time of 2:08.76 in the 200-yard backstroke. Pettersson recorded a second-place finish (59.12) in the 100-yard backstroke as well.

Garriock grabbed two second-place finishes in the meet. She finished with a time of 1:57.27 in the 200-yard freestyle and a clocking of 5:16.35 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 12), as they head to New Haven, Conn. to take on Central Connecticut State at 1 p.m.
