Army Opens Season With Boston, Vermont Battle

WEST POINT, New York, October 4. ARMY, Vermont and Boston University kicked off their 2013-2014 seasons Friday night in a tri-meet at West Point, N.Y.

The Army men defeated Boston University (157-139), while the Black Knight women (1-1) collected a win over Vermont (197-103) but fell to Boston University (154-146).

Friday’s action got off to an exciting start as both the women’s and men’s 200 medley relays were closely contested. Army edged BU in the women’s race, 1:47.68 to 1:48.74, while BU came back to win the men’s event in 1:33.23, just in front of Army’s 1:33.71.

On the women’s side, three swimmers walked away with multiple victories. Army’s Ariana Bullard captured the 100 fly (56.21) and 200 IM (2:08.01), BU’s Chelsea Glincman swept the 1-meter (241.05 points) and 3-meter (248.15 points) diving events, and Vermont’s Christa Weaver topped the field in both sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 in 24.06 and 100 in 52.19. Weaver’s victories were Vermont’s only first-place finishes of the meet.

Several multi-event winners emerged on the men’s side as well. Army’s Casey Woudenberg swept the distance freestyle events, taking the 500 in 4:43.19 and 1,000 in 9:46.11. Teammate Chris Szekely hit the touchpads first in the 100 free (46.44) and 200 free (1:41.78), nearly giving Army a clean sweep of the free events at the meet. Joshua Urnezis swept the diving events, with 267.15 points on the 1-meter and 293.50 points on the 3-meter.

BU teammates Connor Stuewe and Austin Dickey laid claim to the backstroke and breaststroke events, doubling up in both. Stuewe picked up wins in the 100 (51.76) and 200 back (1:52.21), while Dickey turned in the fastest breaststroke times of the day with a 55.71 in the 100 and 2:05.83 in the 200.

BU closed out the meet with wins in both the women’s and men’s 400 freestyle relays. Kendra Cheng, Lauren Dixon, Mika Spencer and Isabella Olivares posted a 3:32.02 to edge Vermont’s 3:33.05. In the men’s race, BU’s Connor Stuewe, Ryan Bach, Cole Puchi and Andres Vazquez topped the heat in 3:08.11. Army took second in 3:10.07.
