Wisconsin-Milwaukee Promotes Dave Joyce to Full Time Assistant Swimming Coach

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, September 3. DAVE Joyce has been named the assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams for the 2013-14 season. Joyce has been serving as a part-time coach with Milwaukee for the past two seasons.

“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to become UWM’s full-time assistant swimming and diving coach,” Joyce said. “After having been on the staff part-time over the past two years, I knew I really wanted to be a part of the program on a larger scale. I am thankful that the opportunity to make that happen has presented itself and am delighted to have been selected for the full-time position. I have enjoyed working with and getting to know (head) coach (Kyle) Clements over the years and am very excited to begin working with him more closely and on an everyday basis. I believe our strengths complement each other’s remarkably well and I am certain we will make a great team.”

In his first two years with the Panthers, Joyce has helped Milwaukee to incredible success. Milwaukee has won three Horizon League Championships in his two years on deck, including a repeat performance by the women’s team last year. The men’s team also had a strong season, breaking five school records and finishing runner-up at the league meet.

On the national level, UWM has had loads of success over the past two seasons. Last year, Milwaukee came in 32nd overall with 12 points at the NCAA Women’s Championships, the best finish ever by a Horizon League school at the national meet. The Panthers also had three individuals swim at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in the summer of 2012, with Emily McClellan just missing a berth to the London Olympics with a sixth-place showing in the 100 breaststroke.

It is a real testament to the overall growth and development of this program,” Clements said. “It is my privilege to announce that Dave Joyce has accepted the assistant coach position here at UWM. Dave represented everything we were searching for in a candidate. He has been an outstanding club coach in the state and has produced countless college swimmers. I have been able to witness Dave’s skill, both as a mentor and coach. He was instrumental in the development of this program and I could not picture this team without him. His number of years of experience, his knowledge of Wisconsin swimming, his rapport with our team and his relationships with the state’s coaches made him the top choice.”

Joyce has been coaching swimming full time for nearly 16 years and is now starting his ninth year as head coach for the YMCA at Pabst Farms. Under his direction, the Piranhas Swim Team has become increasingly more competitive at both the state and national levels. Team members have combined to win countless WSI & YMCA State individual and relay event championships and several swimmers have gone on to compete at the USAS Nationals level.

Recently, two YMCA at Pabst Farms swimmers (Jordan Diel, who used to swim for the Panthers, and Becky Yokosh, who still swims for UWM) qualified for the Olympic Team Trials.

Prior to assuming the role of head coach for the Pabst Farms YMCA Piranhas, Joyce was the head senior coach for the Lake Country “Phoenix” swim team for four years. During that time, 22 LAKE senior swimmers tallied over 50 Wisconsin Swimming state records and one USA Swimming national record.

Joyce also led over 20 swimmers to USA Nationals, with two swimmers qualifying to swim at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. One swimmer achieved placement on the 2002 National Junior Team. The Phoenix team won Wisconsin State team championships every year from 2000-2004 and won the Speedo Sectional Championship in 2003.
