Michigan State Adds Michael Hulme as Assistant Coach

EAST LANSING, Michigan, August 6. MICHIGAN State swimming and diving head coach Matt Gianiodis announced the hiring of assistant coach Michael Hulme on Tuesday. A former swimmer at Ohio State, Hulme spent last season as an assistant at the University of Denver working for coach Brian Shrader.

“Michael is a good fit and that was what we were looking for through the entire process,” said Gianiodis. “He knows the Big Ten conference very well and he respects what it is to compete at the highest level. He also understands very well the work that needs to become to become a great athlete. He is passionate about the sport of swimming and I have confidence it won’t take him long to have equal passion for Spartan swimming.”

While Hulme was at the University of Denver, the Pioneers broke 16 varsity records, finished in the top 25 and qualified two participants at the NCAA Championships. After graduating from Ohio State, he spent one season assisting the Purdue University women’s team under John Klinge. That year, the Purdue women qualified three to the NCAA Championships.

“He has an incredible amount of experience despite being so young and he has been mentored by some awesome coaches going all the way back to when he was in high school at the Bolles School in Florida,” Gianiodis said. “I’m really happy we got this to work out for us and Mike. I got to know him when he was a swimmer at Ohio State and I really admired his work ethic and his love of the sport then.”

The Bozeman, Mont., native is a 2011 graduate of Ohio State where he swam for Coach Bill Wadley. At OSU, Hulme was a four-year letter winner of the varsity swim program and a member for the Buckeye’s 2010 Big Ten Championship team. He qualified for and competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing 27th in the 400 individual medley. He also qualified and competed in the 2008 U.S. Open, the 2009 U.S. World Championship Trials, the 2010 National Championships and the 2011 U.S. Nationals/World Championship Trials.
