Gettysburg Swimming Teams Sweep Ursinus

GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania, November 18. COMPETING in their final dual meets of the first semester, the Gettysburg College swimming teams extended their undefeated records, sweeping Ursinus College in a Centennial Conference (CC) match-up.

The men's team (5-0, 3-0 CC) won 11 of 14 events to power its way to a 181-81 victory. The women's squad (6-0, 4-0 CC) captured a 147-115 decision over a previously-undefeated Ursinus team on the strength of six wins.

The Bears fell to 3-2 (1-2 CC) on the men's side and 4-1 (2-1 CC) in women's action.

Gettysburg's men have now won 17 straight dual meets dating back to the 2010-11 season while the Bullet women have captured 15 consecutive duals since the start of the 2011-12 campaign.

A trio of Bullets won two individual events to pace the men's team, which posted a 1-2-3 sweep in three individual events a 1-2 sweep in both relays. Freshman Tyler Gould (Darien, Conn./Darien) won the 100-butterfly (53.64) and the 200-butterfly (2:02.76) while sophomore Jason Potter (Darien, Conn./Darien) claimed both the 50-freestyle (21.64) and the 100-freestyle (48.80). Sophomore Mike Harmon (Shippensburg, Pa./home-schooled) added victories in the 200-backstroke (1:57.12) and the 200-IM (2:00.87).

Also earning individual wins were sophomore Ashton Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) in the 200-freestyle (1:46.21), junior Adam Weinbrom (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 100-backstroke (54.68), and sophomore Kevin Nicholson (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) in the 200-breaststroke (2:17.91).

In relay action, Harmon, freshman Zack Milko (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), Gould, and sophomore Stu Cubbison (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) claimed the 200-medley in 2:00.00 while Leyens, junior Sean Staerk (Abington, Pa./Abington), Cubbison, and Potter claimed the 400-freestyle in 3:12.41.

Leading the women's team was freshman Marie Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa./State College), who won both the 100-breaststroke (1:09.23) and 200-breaststroke (2:31.21).

Three other Bullets notched individual victories. Sophomore Cooper Kearns (West Hartford, Conn./Miss Porter's School) won by 23 seconds in 10:53.35 in the 1,000-freestyle while senior Caroline Coolidge (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) captured the 100-freestyle in 56.33. In addition, freshman Lea Candelmo (Oakland, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) prevailed in the 500-freestyle (5:17.03).

Gettysburg closed the meet with a victory in the 400-freestyle relay, as senior Deirdre Purdy (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane), sophomore Ellie Houser (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin), Gingher, and Candelmo clocked a 3:46.76 to lead a 1-2 Gettysburg sweep.

The Bullets wrap up their first semester of competition when they host the two-day Final Fall Fast Festival Nov. 30-Dec. 1, taking on Dickinson College, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Mary Washington.
