ROCHESTER, Michigan, November 10. AMR el Sayed, Grant Harding and Karin Tomeckova each won multiple individual events as the Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams swam against Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon in the OU Aquatic Center. The men won with a score of 159-139 and the women fell with a score of 171-123.
"This is one of those meets that you circle on the calendar as it's a rivalry meet and Eastern Michigan is extremely well coached with a long history of swimming success," said head coach Pete Hovland. "Top to bottom, I thought everyone did a great job, we told them that this was a big meet and to swim fast and they did the rest so my hat is off to the kids as we are headed in the right direction."
Harding captured the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.99 and the 50 free with a time of 21.39. He was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay team that finished first with a time of 1:30.84. El Sayed won the 1,000 free with a time of 9:34.71 and the 500 free with a time of 4:31.78.
Tobias Hansen and Hrafn Traustason swept the breaststroke events as Hansen won the 100 breast with a time of 57.33 and Traustason won the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.54. Mitch Alters and Alex Aceino won both butterfly events as Alters touched the wall first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.99 and Aceino captured the 100 fly in 49.98.
Tomeckova swept the backstroke events as she won the 100 back with a time of 56.41 and the 200 back with a time of 2:01.66. She was also a member of the two winning relays as the 200 medley relay won in 1:45.68 and the 400 free relay won with a time of 3:32.13, just .13 seconds in front of EMU. Other Oakland winners included Allison Bellford who touched the wall first in the 50 free in a time of 24.07 and Nikki Flynn in the 100 free with a time of 52.74.
Oakland will be in the pool at the end of the month as part of the team will participate in the USA Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas on Nov. 29-Dec.1, while the rest of the team will participate in the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Nov.30-Dec. 1.
