Saint Michael’s College Holds Off Colby-Sawyer

COLCHESTER, Vermont, November 3. THE Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving squad won the final event on Saturday, the 200-yard freestyle relay, to hold off Colby-Sawyer College, 152-142, while the men grabbed a 179-109 victory in the Purple Knights' season openers in the Ross Sports Center. Both Charger squads are now 1-1.

Junior Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and sophomore Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) both won four events, including joining sophomores Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) and Kathleen Lamontagne (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) on the winning 200 free quartet. The Purple Knights entered the final event ahead by a 139-138 margin, with anything but a victory in the race meaning a meet loss for the squad. However, the foursome combined for a time of 1:45.86, besting the runner-up Colby-Sawyer team by 3.03 seconds and capturing the 11 points needed to clinch the meet win.

Mullowney also bested the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke fields, and Nadow won the 50- and 100-yard backstroke races, including clocking in at 29.62 during the 50 back to outdistance the second-place finisher by 3.56 seconds. The duo joined Lamontagne and senior Corine McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) to also win the 200-yard medley relay. Brady captured a victory in the 50-yard butterfly by 0.01 second over the runner-up, touching the wall in 30.60, and McAllister won the 100 fly. Sophomore Charlotte Murray (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) bettered the competition in the 1,000 free.

Four Purple Knight men played a role in three victories apiece, including sophomore Matt Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and first-years Nick Johns (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) and Joe Thomas (Norwood, Mass./Boston College HS), who also joined sophomore Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) for a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet combined for a showing of 1:49.51, which was 4.81 seconds quicker than the runner up.

Pearson captured the 50 and 100 breast events, and Thomas won the 50 fly and 200 free. Johns was the fastest 100 back swimmer and completed a leg for the victorious 200 free relay, joining seniors Kyle Esposito (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and Andrew Marshall (Kittery, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Saint Joseph's [Maine]) and first-year Brandon MacPherson (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield).

Marshall paced the 500 and 1,000 free races to round out his trio of victories, Paluso bested the 100-yard individual medley, and junior Jack Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) won the 100 fly.

The Purple Knights head to Clarkson University next Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
