Gettysburg Tops Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Maryland, November 3. SENIOR Caroline Coolidge and sophomore Jason Potter won two events apiece, leading the Gettysburg College swimming teams to a sweep over host Washington College in their Centennial Conference openers Saturday afternoon.

The women's team earned a 162.5-89.5 victory while the men captured a 140-112 decision. Both Gettysburg teams improved to 3-0.

On the women's side, the Bullets won 12 of 14 events, though two of their victories were exhibitioned. Coolidge won both the 200-freestyle (2:04.53) and the 500-freestyle (5:35.55) while anchoring the winning 200-freestyle relay (1:45.37) that was exhibitioned. She was joined by sophomore Sasha Hartnett, sophomore Ellie Houser, and senior Deirdre Purdy.

The Bullets claimed seven other individual events, going 1-2-3 in three of them. Freshman Lea Candelmo touched first in the 1,000-freestyle, winning by 47 seconds in 11:03.94. Also winning were freshman Alyssa Pepper in the 100-backstroke (1:03.82), freshman Marie Gingher in the 100-breaststroke (1:11.23), sophomore Cooper Kearns in the 200-butterfly (2:23.19), Purdy in the 50-freestyle (26.31), junior Siobhan Collins in the 200-back (2:22.11), and freshman Sam Evangelista in the 100-fly (53.81).

In addition, freshman Sam Foote, Gingher, Evangelista, and Purdy won the 200-medley relay (1:57.11) while Candelmo captured the exhibitioned 200-IM (2:21.89).

The men's team won eight events outright along with the final two events that were exhibitioned. Potter won the 50-free (21.49) and tied sophomore Stu Cubbison for first in the 100-free (48.84). He also swam on the winning 200-medley relay team (1:38.76) along with sophomore Mike Harmon, freshman Zack Milko, and freshman Tyler Gould.

Other individual winners were sophomore Ashton Leyens in the 200-free (1:48.79), Harmon in the 100-back (53.70), Milko in the 100-breast (1:05.43), junior Adam Weinbrom in the 200-back (2:05.26), and junior Sean Staerk in the 500-free (5:03.47).

In events that were exhibitioned, Harmon hit the wall first in the 200-IM (2:00.70) while Potter, freshman Zach Moser, Cubbison, and Leyens prevailed in 1:28.44.

Gettysburg returns to the pool on Wednesday, when it hosts McDaniel College in another Centennial Conference dual meet starting at 7 p.m.
