Aggie Women Take Down the SMU Mustangs

DALLAS, Texas, October 26. THE Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team was dominant in a 153-103 dual meet victory over SMU on Friday at the Perkins Natatorium on the Mustangs' campus. In the swimming-only competition, the Aggies won 12 of 14 possible races while improving to 3-0 in dual meets this fall. Two weeks ago, the Aggies logged wins over North Carolina and South Carolina in a double-dual in Columbia, S.C.

“I was really pleased with the way we came out and raced,” Aggie head coach Steve Bultman said. “I thought we were better today than we were two weeks ago, so we're moving in the right direction. We need to keep that going as we get ready to go to Florida next week.” The Texas A&M men's and women's swimming and diving teams will battle the Florida Gators next Friday in Gainesville, Fla.

Leading the way for the Aggies was junior Olympian Camille Adams, who won three races against SMU. Adams, fifth in the 200-meter butterfly at the London Olympics, was victorious in the 200-yard fly (NCAA “B” cut time of 1:58.78), the 200 IM (2:03.72) and the 500 freestyle (4:50.55).

“I thought Cammile raced very well,” Bultman said. “She's improved her underwaters and that has helped her.”

Fellow U.S. Olympian Breeja Larson shined with a pair of individual wins and a share of the Aggies' 200-yard medley relay win. Larson won the 100 breaststroke with a pool record time of 1:00.29 and was also victorious in the 200 breast with a time of 2:11.85. Both of Larson's times were NCAA “B” qualifying cuts.

Also contributing multiple race victories was senior Tess Simpson, who swept the backstroke races and led off the Aggies' winning 200 medley relay. Simpson won the 100 back in 55.53 and the 200 back in 1:59.36.

Other Aggies with victories were junior Caroline McElhany in the 100 fly (55.24), redshirt sophomore Lili Ibanez in the 200 free (1:49.20), senior Maureen McLaine in the 1,000 free (9:54.64) and junior Erica Dittmer in the 50 free (23.52).

The Aggies' 200 medley relay of Simpson, Larson, junior Paige Miller and Dittmer hit the wall first in 1:41.78, holding off A&M's “B” relay of freshman Katherine Huff, freshman Ashley McGregor, McElhany and sophomore Sammie Bosma (1:43.95).
