Louisville Trounces Xavier in Season Opener

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, October 13. THE University of Louisville swimming and diving team swept visiting Xavier in the season opener. The Cardinal women won 183-73 and the men prevailed 182-75.

Multiple winners for Louisville's women included Eszter Povazsay, who won the 100-back and 200-back, and Tanja Kylliainen, who won the 200-breast and 200-IM. The freshman for the women were outstanding as Kelsi Worrell won the 200-medley relay, 50-free, and 100-free, Devon Bibault won the 200-butterfly and 100-butterfly, and Lucy Kramer won the 100-breaststroke.

“Kelsi Worrell was very impressive in her versatility tonight”, said head coach Arthur Albiero. “She can move and the clock does not lie, she can put up some times that will draw attention. She performed at a very high level in an early October meet. The freshman had very positive performances and it was exciting to see what they can do.”

Multiple winners for the Cardinal men included Caryle Blondell, who won the 200-medley relay and 100-back, Kameron Chastain, who won the 100-breast and 200-breast, Juan Lopez, who won the 200-butterfly, 200-back, and 100-butterfly, and Joao De Lucca, who won the 200-free and 100-free in 44.04. Freshman Bryan Draganosky won the 1000-free and 500-free.

In regards to Joao De Lucca in the 100-free, head coach Arthur Albiero stated, “It is a pretty competitive time nationally. He is a guy who continues to learn, he is humble, and he loves a good fight. He has big goals for this season and it drives the whole team too.”

In the women's 200-medley relay, the U of L foursome of Krissie Brandenburg, Gisselle Kohoyda, Kelsi Worrell, and Grite Apanaviciute combined forces to post a winning time of 1:44.81. The Louisville B-relay team of Eszter Povazsay, Lucy Kramer, Brittany Robinson, and Hanna Cowley finished in second with a time of 1:46.26.

In the men's 200-medley relay, the Cardinals team of Caryle Blondell, Michael Haefner, Albert Lloyd, and Samuel Hoekstra touched first with a time of 1:33.25. The Louisville team comprised of Nathan Kinney, Kameron Chastain, Kevin Bandy, and Matt Schlytter came in second with a time of 1:33.33.

In the grueling 1000-free, the Cardinals completed a top three sweep. Abigail Chin finished first with a time of 10:10.82. Coming in second was Carly Munchel at 10:21.04 and Erika Wozniak in third with a time of 10:26.69.

Freshman Bryan Draganosky took the first touch and won his first collegiate race in the men's 1000 yard-free with a time of 9:21.14.

Louisville again took a top three sweep in the women's 200-free. Breann McDowell touched first at 1:52.46. Victoria Mitchell came in second with a time of 1:53.29 and Hanna Cowley was in at 1:53.56.

For the men's 200-free, Joao De Lucca touched first with a time of 1:38.76. Alex Burtch came in second at 1:41.93 and Albert Lloyd came in at 1:43.30 to lead the Cardinals.

Eszter Povazsay won the women's 100-backstroke in a time of 55.98. Second was Erica Belcher at 56.79 and Krissie Brandenburg with a time of 57.13. For the men's 100-backstroke, Caryle Blondell touched first with a time of 50.74 and Aaron Young came in behind him at 51.77. Freshman Nolan Tesone swam third with a time of 53.01.

In the women's 100-breastroke, Lucy Kramer went 1:06.54 for the win, followed by Gisselle Kohoyda's time of 1:06.75. Tanja Kylliainen was third in 1:06.87. Kameron Chastain won the men's 100-breaststroke at 56.22. Michael Haefner came in second with a time of 58.53 and Addison Bray followed in 59.78.

Freshman Devon Bibault wont the women's 200-butterfly with a time of 2:04.98. Touching in second was Carly Munchel in 2:06.27 and Jackie Sherrard in third with a time of 2:06.40. For the men, Juan Lopez won the 200-butterfly in 1:52.09. Kevin Bandy touched second coming in at 1:52.49.

Freshman Kelsi Worrell added to the success of the freshman as she won the women's 50-free with a time of 23.68. Grite Apanaviciute came in second in the race coming in at 24.22. For the men, Matt Schlytter won the 50-free in 20.85, followed by Samuel Hoekstra touching in 21.06.

Again, Kelsi Worrell won, this time in the women's 100-freestyle with a time of 50.66. Second was Hanna Cowley at 52.26 and Grite Apanaviciute in 52.78. Joao De Lucca won the men's 100-free with a time of 44.04, followed by Caryle Blondell in 45.56 and Albert Lloyd in 46.57.

Eszter Povazsay took first in the women's 200-backstroke with a time of 2:00.81. Erica Belcher touched in second at 2:01.04 and Victoria Mitchell came in third in 2:02.01.

In the men's 200-backstroke, Juan Lopez touched first in 1:50.37 and coming in second was freshman Nolan Tesone in at 1:51.33.

In the women's 200-breaststroke, Tanja Kylliainen took first with a time of 2:20.80, followed by freshman Lucy Kramer in 2:20.92. Gisselle Kohoyda placed third at 2:21.95. For the men, Kameron Chastain won the 200-breaststroke in 2:04.79. Michael Haefner came in second with a time of 2:06.21 and Addison Bray touched third right behind him in 2:06.23.

Victoria Mitchell won the women's 500-free with a time of 4:55.96, followed by Carly Munchel in 5:03.98, and Erika Wozniak in 5:05.51. Freshman Bryan Draganosky won the 500-freestyle for the men in 4:34.24. In second was Michael Pryor with a time of 4:47.83 and in third Nate Bond in 4:48.45.

Freshman Devon Bibault won the women's 100-butterfly in 56.44. Juan Lopez won the 100-butterfly for the men with a time of 50.49, followed by freshman Pedro Coutinho in 50.89.

The winner of the women's 200-IM was Tanja Kylliainen with a time of 2:04.42. Evan Noble took first in the men's 200-IM with a time of 1:53.80. Freshman Brett MacKenzie came in third with a time of 1:59.30.

In the women's 200-freestyle relay the Louisville team of Krissie Brandenburg, Grite Apanaviciute, Kelsi Worrell, and Hanna Cowley won with a time of 1:34.57. For the men, Pedro Coutinho, Matt Schlytter, Nathan Kinney, and Joao De Lucca won the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:24.08.

“I appreciate Xavier coming in, they are truly great friends of the program,” said U of L coach Arthur Albiero. “They are always welcome here in Louisville.”
