LSU Women Claim Southeastern Conference Opener Over Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, October 10. LSU Women's Swimming (2-0, 1-0 SEC) defeated Vanderbilt (0-0, 0-1 SEC) by a score of 181-80 in the Lady Tiger's first conference and second road meet of the season.

“Coming up, traveling and getting into a mid-week competition certainly has its challenges,” Swimming Coach Dave Geyer said. “I think we performed well, but obviously we need to raise the level of our swims as we move forward in SEC competition, especially as we head to Auburn next week.”

The Lady Tigers were led by NCAA Qualifier sophomore Amber Carter's pair of victories in the 100 butterfly (55.59) and the 100 freestyle (51.61). In total, the team won 11 of the 14 events.

“Amber Carter had a great meet and she looks really good in the water right now,” Geyer said. “We are developing well, but we need to raise our level of competition as we move forward to put ourselves in the position we want to be at in the end of the year.”

A trio of NCAA Qualifiers earned an individual victory. Senior Sara Haley won the 200 fly (2:03.77), junior Rainey White won the 50 free (24.06) and junior Torrey Bussey won the 200 individual medley (2:05.28).

LSU swept the distance events behind freshmen Jesse James and Stacey Stanfield, who each delivered first place swims in the 1000 free (10:21.96) and 500 free (5:05.30), respectively. James finished second in the 500 free (5:05.30) as well.

Fellow freshman Megan Cox touched the wall first in the 200 free with an impressive mark of 1:52.85. Sophomore Katlin Sepp won the 100 backstroke with a mark of 57.42.

The Lady Tigers' also swept the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

“The medley relay is still wide open. In the freestyle relays, the speed and the sprint work is just starting to come on a little bit training wise,” Geyer said. “We still have some development to do from the freestyle perspective.”

The entire LSU Swimming and Diving program will travel to Auburn, Ala. to take on Auburn on Oct. 20. At the SEC Championships, Auburn's men's team repeated as the conference champion for the 16th consecutive year and the women's team finished fourth, one spot ahead of the Lady Tigers.
