N.C. State Clinches All-North Carolina Invite Title

RALEIGH, North Carolina, October 7. AFTER compiling a successful season debut on Friday, the NC State swimming & diving team followed up that performance with a stellar showing on day two of the All-NC Invitational. The Wolfpack men's and women's teams finished in first place in the total points for the team standings.

The women's 200-yard medley relay team started the day off for State, and did so by finishing first, earning 64 points for the team. Juniors Zina Grogg and Kaitlin Mills, along with freshman Riki Bonnema and Payton Schrum completed the event in 1:45.20, just seconds shy of the all-time mark.

“It was a good meet for the Wolfpack and a good start to the season,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “The kids raced hard and were proud of their effort. The divers also did well, representing our team on the diving boards.”

The Pack men's team dominated the 200-yard freestyle as all four of the top spots were occupied by State swimmers. Jonathan Boffa finished first (1.39.47), Louis Wojciechowski second (1:41.96), Matthew Thomas third (1:42.10), and Barrett Miesfeld fourth (1:43.52).

In the men's 100-yard backstroke, Ivan Kopas led the way with a time of 50.27 seconds and was trailed closely by Camper and David Williams who finished second and third, respectively. Grogg won the 100 yard backstroke on the women's side clocking in at 56.32.

“We're excited about the emotion and passion that the athletes create on deck because its contagious to the rest of the team and they feed off each other,” said Holloway.

Freshman Kristin Connors continued her dominance in the distance freestyle events, finishing first in the 1650-yard freestyle at 17:13.00 after an impressive showing in the 500 freestyle event on Friday.

In diving, senior All-American Hannah Hopkins topped the standings in the 3-meter dive, while Rachel Mumma and Madeline Keeley finished closely behind for second and third place. For the men, Hudson Rains and Charles Retter led the charge finishing first and second.

The women's team completed the invitational with a total of 1,563 points, good for first place among women's teams participating. Also finishing first, was the men's team with 1,556 points.

“We want to thank all of the teams that participated in this year's invitational,” Holloway said. “Without the support and participation from so many of the teams, the event would not have been as successful.”

The men will return to action on Oct. 19, when they travel to the University of Southern California. The women return to action on Oct. 27 at Louisiana State University.
