Navy Navigates Past Loyola, George Mason

BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 6. THE Navy men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to win 24 of 32 events and both came away victorious in their season-opening meet on Saturday at Loyola. The Navy men defeated Loyola, 184-104, and George Mason, 155-134. The women downed the host Greyhounds, 196-95, and defeated George Mason, 192-96.

The Mids set the tone for the day in first event as both the men's and women's teams won their respective 200 medley relay races by over two seconds. Kellie Darmody, Laura Gorinski, Toni Paruso and Danielle Reminger clocked a 1:48 to win, while Zach Ingold, Luke Hoffer, Ben Bondurant and Robbie Parker posted a winning time of 1:35.04.

Ingold and freshman Tom Duvall both won a pair of events to lead the men's team. Ingold won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.82 and later took the 100 free with a 45.87. Duvall opened with a win in the 1000 freestyle, posting a 9:32.97, and later finished ahead of teammate Alex Nickell in the 500 freestyle to take first place with a time of 4:39.65.

Parker touched out teammate Sean Bagent by .14 in the 50 freestyle, with a time of 21.33, and Hoffer took the 200 breaststroke by nearly three full seconds with a time of 2:08.07. Other event winners for the Navy men included Bill Young in the 100 breaststroke (59.72) and Jon Debaugh in the 200 butterfly (1:52.71).

Ben Freedman won the one-meter dive with a score of 277.55. Joe Espositio was Navy's top finisher on the three-meter, registering a 245.5, to take second place.

“We weren't as good as we were hoping to be today. We also were not as good as we usually are at this meet,” said Navy men's head coach Bill Roberts. “We're looking forward to getting back in the pool and getting better.”

The Navy women received significant contributions from its freshman class on Saturday as a total of five plebes came away with first-place finishes. Freshmen Ellen Bradford and Rachael Dudley joined Reminger as Navy's mulitiple-event winners.

Bradford won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.65 and was the first of four Navy plebes to touch the wall in the 200 breaststroke. Bradford clocked a time of 2:23.44, ahead of classmates Katie Young, Stephanie Ross and Kristine Doan.

Dudley took the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.17 and later finished ahead of Morgan Nassif to win the 500 freestyle by clocking a 5:05.29.

Reminger took the 200 freestyle (1:54.56) and 100 freestyle (53.55). Fellow senior Darmody won the 100 backstroke with a 58.74.

Other top-finishing Navy freshmen included Nassif in the 1000 freestyle (10:30.8), Emily Brown in the 50 freestyle (24.86) and Zoe Macfarlane in the 200 backstroke (2:05.42).

Jordyn Nicholl won the three-meter dive with a score of 215.55, while Emily Saitta took the one-meter competition with a 224.55.

“Overall, it was a very good meet. It was good to get out and race,” said Navy women's head coach John Morrison. “It was good to see the plebes step up today. We're pleased with where we stand right now, but we have a lot of work to do.”
