San Diego State Swamps UNLV

SAN DIEGO, California, September 29. THE San Diego State swimming and diving team had three athletes win multiple events as it defeated UNLV in a Mountain West dual meet on Saturday at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Aztecs won 11 of 14 races as well as one diving competition en route to the victory.

The final meet score of 146-143 in favor of SDSU was not indicative of the Aztecs' dominance as San Diego State elected not to score pints in four of the final five swimming events.

Junior Mikaela Macklin was a triple winner for SDSU as she captured first place in the 200 butterfly (2:07.07), 200 breaststroke (2:21.82) and 200 individual medley (2:05.34). She was also a member of the 200 medley relay team that place second in 1:46.07, just .35 second behind the winning Aztec foursome of Chelsea Bailey, Kelsey Jenkinson, Gemma Johnson and Taylor Johnson to open the meet.

Freshman Natilee Ruiz captured a pair of first place finished impressive fashion. She first won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.26, a time that ranks as the eighth-fastest at the Aquaplex and ninth-best in school history, Ruiz later took first in to 200 backstroke in 2:02.99, the fourth-fastest time ever at the Aquaplex and a mark that ranks10th in the SDSU record book.

The Aztecs; other double winner was Melanie Garibaldi, who won both the 100 freestyle in 10:17.05 and the 500 freestyle in 4:59.81.

SDSU's other individual race victories came from a senior and two first-year Aztecs. Senior Aztec Leona Jennings won the 100 backstroke in 56.79. Freshman Kelsey Jenkinson captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.50 while sophomore transfer Maddy Dalcamo took first in the 100 freestyle (53.05).

In the diving competition, Anna Stein captured first place in the three-meter board with a score of 266.85 and also finished second in the one-meter springboard with a mark of 264.97. Of the four dives who competed for SDSU, three were freshman making their college debuts. That trio included Kelsey Bean (fourth in the one-meter at 2:01.90), Chandler Marshall (third in the three-meter at 232.72) and Ashley Stott (fourth in the three-meter at 222.38).

Up next for the swimmers and divers is a trip north to Stockton, Calif., in three weeks to compete in the Pacific Invitational to be held Oct. 19-20 at UOP's Chris Kjeldsen Pool Complex.
