Wisconsin Sweeps Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Michigan, September 28. THE University of Wisconsin swimming and diving teams started their season on a strong note, earning both team victories and defeating Michigan State at the IM West outdoor pool on Friday.

“We weren't fantastic today but on a brighter note we also weren't bad,” head coach Whitney L. Hite said. “The only place to go from here is forward and that's what we'll do.”

Wisconsin, which is competing in the month of September for the first time during the Hite era, has never participated in an event held in an outdoor pool. Despite the circumstances, the Badgers displayed remarkable early season performances, including a trio of pool records, en route to their second-consecutive season-opening victory.

The Badgers began the meet by taking both the men's and women's 400 medley relays, with Elle Meinholz, Ruby Martin, Hannah Ross and Rebecka Palm finishing in a time of 4:01.17. The men's team of Drew TeDuits, Josh Bushman, Dan Lester and Ryan O'Donnell secured the victory for the men.

TeDuits followed up his medley relay victory by setting a pool record in the men's 100 meter backstroke, finishing in a time of 59.25. Not to be outdone, Martin won the women's 100 meter freestyle in a pool record time of 58.57, while also securing the victory in the first heat 50 meter freestyle in 27.60.

Martin set the stage for her younger sister, sophomore Ivy Martin, who was poised for a promising sophomore campaign following an All-American freshman season in 2011. Ivy did not disappoint, setting a pool record in the 50 freestyle and finishing with a time of 26.97, edging out her older sibling by less than a second.

Senior Marcus Guttmann swam the men's 200 meter butterfly in a time of 2:09.80, securing the overall victory for the Badgers in their first competitive meet of 2012.

“I thought the freshmen did very well — being four weeks into the season it shows us what we need to improve on,” Hite said. “The time we've had to train so far hasn't been extensive and certainly hasn't given the team enough time to get in shape but there definitely were positives today.”

The Badgers return to the pool Saturday morning to take on the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich., at 9:30 a.m. CT.
