Alabama Adds Mike Davidson as Assistant Coach

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama, June 4. OLYMPIAN and All-American Mike Davidson has been named to the Alabama swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach Crimson Tide head coach Dennis Pursley announced this week.

“Mike Davidson is a great addition to our staff,” Pursley said. “Not only is he a tremendous coach who really understands the team dynamic that we're building at Alabama, but as a Crimson Tide All-American and member of the 1987 SEC Championship team, he appreciates the tradition of excellence that surrounds the University of Alabama and what a truly special place the Capstone is. Mike knows firsthand what it means to be a world-class athlete on a championship team. He brings with him a strong work ethic and a burning desire to see Alabama once again competing for championship titles.”

Davidson, who earned his bachelor's degree from Alabama in 1989, returns to Tuscaloosa after five years as head coach of the Hide Tide Aquatic Club in Gainesville, Fla. Other coaching stops include head coach of Sub-4 Swimming and a stint as a New Zealand national team coach.

A distance ace and team captain for the Crimson Tide during the late 1980s, Davidson earned All-American honors in the mile and helped lead Alabama to the 1987 Southeastern Conference team title under the direction of legendary UA coach Don Gambril.

Before joining the Tide, he swam for New Zealand at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles where he posted top-16 finishes in the 400 and 1500-meter freestyles. He also earned a bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. He was inducted into New Zealand's Northland Sports Legends Hall of Fame in 2011.

Davidson is married to the former Jennifer Brothers, an All-American swimmer on Alabama's 1985 SEC Championship team, the first UA women's team to win a conference team title, and a coach whose career includes the New Zealand national team among other stops.
