NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships: Arizona’s Kevin Cordes Holds Off Field to Win 100 Breast

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 23. KEVIN Cordes, a newly-minted American record holder with a stunning 51.32 during prelims, won the men's 100 breast in a nailbiter at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships. Cordes raced to victory in 51.71, well back of his record from this morning. The win was Arizona's third of the night, and gave the Wildcats their first 100 breast victory in school history.

Louisville's Carlos Almeida placed second in 51.78, besting his 51.85 from prelims and moving to sixth all time. California's Martin Liivamagi took third in 51.93, off his 51.88 from prelims. Arizona's Carl Mickelson (52.18), California's Nolan Koon (52.42), California's Trevor Hoyt (52.55), Indiana's Cody Miller (52.82) and Texas' Eric Friedland (52.86) also vied for the NCAA title.

Princeton's Jonathan Christensen posted a 52.95 to win the B final. Stanford's Curtis Lovelace (53.11), Old Dominion's Arni Arnason (53.24), Auburn's Stuart Ferguson (53.30), California's Christian Higgins (53.32), Penn's Brendan McHugh (53.50), Duke's Piotr Safronczyk (53.71) and Arizona's Kevin Munsch (53.98) also picked up points for their squads.

California put some serious distance between itself and Texas with the event, pushing to 302.5 points. Texas stood second with 252.5 points, while Arizona held third with 235 points. Stanford (205) and Michigan (164) stood fourth and fifth.
