NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships: Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace Wins 100 Free at Home

AUBURN, Alabama, March 17. AUBURN's Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace brushed off a disappointing finish in the 50 free to defend her 100 free title in her home pool at the NCAA Division I Women's Championships. Vanderpool-Wallace scorched the pool with a 46.88, the seventh fastest time ever, for seven of the top nine times. Only Natalie Coughlin (46.84, 46.85) has other times in the top nine.

Georgia's Megan Romano, who clocked what is believed to be the fastest 100 freestyle relay split in history with a 46.07 earlier this meet, took second in 47.01. That time bettered her lifetime best 47.05 from prelims, that put her third in the all time list. Arizona's Margo Geer checked in with a third-place time of 47.14 to move to fourth all time, up from sixth.

Texas' Karlee Bispo (47.41), California's Liv Jensen (47.69), Missouri's Shara Stafford (47.76), Stanford's Andrea Murez (47.79) and Stanford's Madeline Schaefer (47.96) also swam in the finale.

Stanford's Elizabeth Webb topped the B final with a 47.99, while teammate Samantha Woodward placed second in 48.08. Georgia's Madeline Locus (48.39), Tennessee's Caroline Simmons (48.62), Florida's Sarah Bateman (48.74), Wisconsin's Rebecca Thompson (48.76), Arizona State's Shannon Landgrebe (48.79) and Georgia's Shannon Vreeland (48.82) also swam in the consolation heat.

California pushed its leading total to 332 points, while Georgia remained second with 316 points. Stanford made a big push for the battle for third with 278 points, while Arizona (257) and Southern California (242) held fourth and fifth.
