Maine vs. Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vermont, November 12. SOPHOMORE Claudia Etherington won three events to lead the Vermont swimming and diving team to a 172-125 victory over America East rival Maine on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Catamounts improve to 6-0 on the season.

Etherington set the pace by sweeping the two backstroke events and also won the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.26. Vermont went 1-2-3 in both backstroke events, as Etherington won the 200 in a time of 2:03.67, which was almost nine seconds faster than second place, while also taking first in the 100 (58.24).

Junior Kailey Gardner, senior Avery Pittman and freshman Katie Adams each won a pair of events for Vermont, as Gardner was victorious in the 500 (5:07.90) and 1,000 (10:24.24) freestyle races. Pittman won both butterfly events, earning a first in the 100 (58.53) and 200 (2:08.21), while Adams swept the 100 (53.74) and 200 (1:56.29) freestyle events. Wrapping up the Catamount wins on the day was junior Chelsea Krisanda who took the top spot in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.74.

"I am proud of the team for staying focused when things did not go well to start off the meet," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "They overcame obstacles and stayed focused to pull out the win."

The Catamounts return to action next Sunday (Nov. 20) when they host Bryant starting at 1 p.m.
