James Madison vs. West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, October 29. JAMES Madison won seven events, including earning the top three positions in both diving events as it defeated West Virginia, 156-144 at the WVU Natatorium on Saturday. JMU added nine second-place finishes to help it edged by the Mountaineers.
The win improves the Dukes to 5-2 in dual matches this season as it prepares for its first conference action at the Colonial Athletic Association POD meet next weekend. West Virginia dropped to 0-1 in its first dual action of the season.

The diving trio of junior Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield), senior Nicole Jotso (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and freshman Alex Savage (Carrolton, Texas/Lewisville Hebron) swept both diving events with Helfrich placing first twice. Helfrich set a new career-high as she scored a 307.80 to win the one-meter board while adding a 280.50 in winning the three-meter event. Jotso was second on the one-meter (295.09) and third on the three-meter (247.50). Savage scored a 273.00 to take second on the three-meter board and a career-high 281.40 on the one-meter.

Freshman Susanne Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle while also participating on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished first. Gingher touched the wall in a time of 24.32 in the 50 free to narrowly edge senior teammate Catalina Mendieta (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas) who finished second in 24.68. Gingher and Mendieta were joined by senio rEva Hannesdottir (Seltjarnarnes, Iceland/Kvennaskolinn) and sophomore Shannon Dubay (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) to win the 200 free relay in a time of 1:36.49.

Other individual event winners included sophomore Kelsey Holmgaard (Roanoke, Va./George Mason) and freshman Sin Hye Won (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). Holmgaard won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.52 with Won touching the wall at 1:05.24 in the 100 breaststroke to win that event.

Won, Mendieta, Hannesdottir and junio rAndrea Criscuolo (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.22.

Holmgaard earned two of JMU's second-place finishes in the 200 free and the 200 individual medley. Hannesdottir was second in the 100 free, freshman Aimee Hooper (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was second in the 500 free and sophomoreMorgan Johnson (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock) was second in the 1,000 free.

West Virginia was led by Rachel Burnett and Mandie Nugent each of whom won three individual events. Other individual event winners included Tiera Butkus, Danielle Smith and Breanna McCann.

JMU returns to the pool next Friday, Nov. 4 in Fairfax, Va., as it takes on George Mason, William & Mary, Old Dominion and Northeastern in the CAA POD meet.
