Kansas vs. Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, October 21. THE Minnesota women's swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 on the season after sweeping visiting Kansas, 206-87, in a non-conference dual meet Friday afternoon at the University Aquatic Center. The home team won all 14 swimming events and both diving events in the meet against the Jayhawks.

"We continued with another dual-meet victory and our freshman class on a roll," head women's coach Terry Nieszner said. "Tori Simenec swam very strong and Tess Behrens cut down her times and won multiple events. We just had a great performance from the team as a whole."

Sophomore Tess Behrens and freshman Tori Simenec each tallied three victories in the meet, which included Behren's NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.22 in the 100 backstroke.

"I swam mostly backstroke today, which is very typical day for me," Behrens said. "I did what I usually do, which is go out and race and it turned out well for me today. I am really excited for the rest of the season. I am way ahead on training and am looking forward to Big Tens in the next couple months. As a whole our team dynamic is great and the atmosphere is irreplaceable."

The Gophers opened the dual event with a victory in the 200 medley relay, with Behrens, Lauren Greenberg, Becca Weiland and Erin Caflisch clocking in at 1:44.29, before senior Hannah Whitehead tallied Minnesota's second victory of the afternoon in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:01.02. Fellow senior Kristin Steenvoorden touched in 10:03.16 in the event for a second-place finish.

Minnesota continued its winning ways with a Jessica Plant victory in the 200 freestyle (1:49.59). Greenberg won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.05, Simenec took the title in the 200 butterfly by clocking in at 2:03.38 and Blake Zeiger's 23.87-finish in the 50 freestyle gave the home squad its seventh victory of the day.
For the third-straight week, sophomore Maggie Keefer won 1-meter diving with her third-consecutive NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark of 303.15 in the event, and junior Katie Grunawalt took first-place honors in 3-meter diving with a score of 315.30, her second NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark in the event this season.

After a 20-minute intermission, Marissa Davies opened with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.45), before Behrens posted her third victory of the meet in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.35. Elizabeth Weitz tallied win No. 10 for the Golden Gophers with her 2:19.63 finish in the 200 breaststroke and Kiera Janzen won by an impressive margin in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:52.39.

Simenec and Plant each posted their second wins of the afternoon in the 100 butterfly (55.43) and 200 individual medley (2:05.34), respectively, before the 400 relay team of Simenec, Davies, Weis and Caflisch closed out the sweep with a time of 3:26.42.

The Gophers return to action Oct. 28 when they travel to Madison, Wis., for a Big Ten match-up with Wisconsin.
