Indiana’s Eric Ress Sitting Out Season

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, October 22. INDIANA's Eric Ress, who initially had looked into switching his sport nationality from France to the U.S., has elected to continue representing France internationally according to a source close to the situation.

Because of this decision, in conjunction with the fact that the French Olympic Trials and the NCAA Division I Championships are both scheduled for the third week of March 2012, Ress has decided to sit out the season collegiately.

Ress, a runner-up in both backstrokes at this year's NCAAs, will likely be applying for a sixth year of eligibility. He cannot use a redshirt year this year, because he already used his redshirt as a sophomore when he tore his ACL. Ress is entering his third year of eligibility after competing for the Hoosiers in 2008-09 and 2010-11, while redshirting 2009-10.

Ress, a dual citizen of France and the United States, was initially selected for France's World University Games team based on his performances at the NCAA championships. But in order to "keep all options open," he declined the invitation just in case he decided to change his nationality to the U.S.
