East Carolina vs. Davidson

DAVIDSON, North Carolina, October 15. THE East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Davidson on Saturday thanks to 12 first-place finishes for the ladies and seven by the men. Holly Berenotto and Anna Gibas led the women's team with two individual first-place finishes each and helped the 400 medley `B' relay team to gold. On the men's side, Tyler Dunsmore finished with two first-place finishes, sweeping the diving events.

Both teams improved to 1-1 in dual meets this season after the ladies posted a 181.5-109.5 victory over the Wildcats, while the men's team recorded a 167.5-130.5 triumph.

For the women's team, Bernotto won the 50 (24.28) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.00), and swam the fourth leg of the Pirates' 400-medley `B' relay team (3:55.22). After swimming the first leg of the 400-medley relay. Gibas swept the backstroke events as she edged out teammate Kylie Francis in the 100 (58.47) and captured first-place in the 200 (2:06.95) by nearly three seconds ahead of Kayla Ford. Francis also earned second-place in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Pirates finished 1-2-3 in 100 and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 50, 500 and 1000-yard freestyle.

Caitlin Marsilli posted East Carolina's initial individual win of the meet, touching first in the 1000 freestyle (10:34.71) in front of freshmen teammates Lauren Chew and Lauren Gray. Megan Rossi earned gold in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.47) followed by Brittany Radcliffe and Marsilii. Kali Gaskill and Heather O'Toole helped complete the medal sweep of the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Gaskill claimed first-place in the 100-yard freestyle (54.32) as did Natalia Favoreto in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.27) and Danielle Morrin in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.50). ECU also earned individual triumphs on the diving boards with Katie Yamamoto winning on the one-meter spring board (247.43) and Meghan Coyne capturing first-place on the three-meter board (283.80).
In men's action, five swimmers claimed individual event victories.

Travis Stauder led a medal sweep in the 50-yard freestyle (21.75), narrowly finishing ahead of Ailton Temotio (21.93) and Jeffrey Mead (21.96). Temotio later picked up a win in the 100-yard butterfly (51.42).

J.D. Flanagan (200 butterfly), Rokas Cepulis (200 breaststroke), and Attila Kiraly (200 IM) each placed first in individual events to lead ECU.

Dunsmore swept the one-meter and three-meter diving events as ECU was able to go 1-2- on the boards. Kyle Comiskey finished second on both.

The teams will return to action Saturday, Oct. 29 at College of Charleston.
