Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State vs. Miami

CORAL GABLES, Florida, October 1. THE Florida State women's swimming and diving team claimed two victories as they swept both Miami and Florida Gulf Coast today in Coral Gables, Fla., posting scores of 192-106 against Miami and 214-84 against FGCU.

"I was really excited with the way the ladies came together as a team," head coach Neil Harper said. "They did an excellent job of competing after our tough week of training and they took advantage of the opportunity they had before them today."

A trio of freshmen started off their collegiate careers off on the right foot by contributing a first place each. Ginny Grams had an impressive day as she turned in a pair of wins in the 200 free and 100 fly. She won the 200 free in 1:49.85, just ahead of Elizabeth Pepper, who touched at 1:50.80. Grams then went on to swim a 56.05 in the 100 fly.

Pepper would come back and win the 200 fly with a 2:01.93, just a little over two seconds ahead of sophomore Julia Henkel, who touched second at 2:04.15. Kaitlyn Dressel would post her first win in the 100 free, touching at 50.65, just ahead of sophomore Tiffany Oliver (51.15).

In addition, Grams and Dressel would team up with another freshman Haley Powell and Oliver to win the 200 free relay at the end of the meet, posting a 1:34.21.

"It was good to see Grams, Pepper and Dressel step up in their first collegiate meet," Harper said. "They were able to change gears, step up and win some events for us."

The Seminoles were able to win every individual race of the 200 distance. In addition to Grams and Pepper, Senior Stephanie Sarandros took the 200 back in 2:01.94, junior Kristine Polley captured the 200 breast win at 2:17.82 and senior Tori Richmond grabbed first in the 200 IM at 2:04.91.

Also contributing first places were Senior Charlotte Broadbent, who dominated the field in the 1000 free (10:15.35) and Henkel won the 500 free, just under five minutes at 4:59.28.

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will head to Gainesville, Fla. next weekend to compete in the All-Florida Invite.
