NC State Hires Stephen Thompson as Assistant Coach

RALEIGH, North Carolina, August 3. NC State swimming and diving head coach Braden Holloway announced today that Stephen Thompson has joined the Wolfpack coaching staff as an assistant coach. Thompson comes to Raleigh after serving the past six seasons as the head swimming and diving coach at Division II Lewis University, turning the Flyers into a top-25 program.

"Adding Coach Thompson to the staff is the last piece of the puzzle that will lead us into the future of great success," said Coach Holloway. "He has a strong resume established within the swimming community, and he has gained valuable experience from both the club and college coaching ranks.

"Everywhere that he's been, he has produced outstanding results, and I look forward to him bringing that same mentality and approach to State.
His ability to turn Lewis University into a top-25 program and produce numerous All-Americans proves that he will be a vital asset to our staff."

As an assistant coach at State, Thompson will focus on distance events and strokes.

"I am honored and privileged to be a part of Coach Holloway's staff,"
said Thompson. "His energy and passion for State is contagious, and I am excited to work with him and the other coaches to help re-establish the traditions of the Wolfpack program in the ACC."

As the head coach at Lewis, Thompson's Flyers collected 37 All-America citations, collected 16 individual conference championships and broke 18 different school records a total of 49 times. The men's program finished in the top 25 nationally in all six of his seasons, while the women placed 30th in 2007 and 28th in 2008.

With a strict dedication to academic excellence, Thompson's teams at Lewis were recognized as Academic All-American in 2007, '08, '09 and '10. In both 2009 and '10, 12 swimmers were named academic all-conference.

Before entering the collegiate ranks Thompson served as a head coach with four club programs: Greenville North Carolina Swim Club (2004-05), North Suburban Illinois YMCA (2002-04), North County California Aquatics (1999-2002) and Crawfish Louisiana Aquatic Club (1998-99). Prior to that he was an assistant with the Bengal Tiger Louisiana Aquatic Club (1997-98), and a head coach at both Seneca Valley Pennsylvania High School (1996-97) and Farragut Tennessee High School (1995-96).

Thompson graduated from Tennessee in 1995 with a B.A. in English.

A native of Fairmont, W. Va., Thompson is married to the former Katherine Wendt, a collegiate swimmer and former team captain at Minnesota. They are the proud parents of daughters Kylie Anne and Abigail Jane.
