San Jose State Hires Pete Raykovich as Assistant Coach

SAN JOSE, California, August 2. ASCA Level 5 coach Pete Raykovich joins the San Jose State women's swimming and diving coaching staff for the 2011-12 season.

San Jose, Calif. – Pete Raykovich, an American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 5 coach, has agreed to join the staff of the San Jose State women's swimming and diving team. Head coach Sage Hopkins made the announcement.

"Pete brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and credibility to our program," head coach Sage Hopkins said. "He is one of the top coaches in the world having coached athletes to the highest levels competition including Olympic games, World Championships and Pan-Pacific Championships, to name a few. His coaching acumen and ability to recruit will be a tremendous asset to our program. With this hire, there is no team in Division I swimming with a better assistant coach than San Jose State."

Raykovich has spent the last 18 years building the De Anza Cupertino Aquatics (DACA) into a national powerhouse. His teams have consistently placed in the top-10 in national championships and junior nationals. Under his guidance, DACA has grown to become the sixth largest swimming program in the nation. He has had more than 60 athletes earn collegiate and high school All-America honors, as well as more than 40 who have been recognized as Academic All-Americans at both the collegiate and high school level.

Raykovich began his coaching career in 1979 at the Indian Valley Aquatics Club (IVAC). He coached at IVAC until 1990, when he accepted the position of head coach of the women's swimming program at the University of Tennessee (1990-93).

He has produced numerous National Champions, national record holders and medalists in international competitions. Raykovich has regularly served as a member of USA Swimming's National Team coaching staff and is currently working with the USA National Junior Team. He has a long history serving in a leadership role with in USA Swimming, including long standing terms with the Olympic International Operations Committee, Senior Committee and National Board of Review.

"I am looking forward to working with the team," Raykovich said. "We have the ambition to contend for the WAC title every year and also to establish ourselves as a consistent presence at the NCAA Championships."
