Thorpe is Training in Preparation for Commonwealth Games Trials

MELBOURNE, Australia, August 27. IN the middle of a year-long sabbatical from competition, Ian Thorpe will return to major event action from January 30 through February 4, during the Australian Trials for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The Trials and the Games will be held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center.

Thorpe was the most notable name missing from last month’s World Championships in Montreal, but has been in training, according to a story by the Australian Associated Press. The world-record holder and reigning Olympic titlist in the 200 and 400 freestyle events, Thorpe has indicated that his ultimate focus is Beijing, site of the 2008 Olympic Games.

"He's been refreshing himself and having a bit of a break, but training really hard and just getting ready for the Commonwealth Games," said Dave Flaskas, Thorpe’s manager.
