Word University Games Day 2

IZMIR, Turkey, August 13. DAY two at the World University Games failed to yeild any American gold medals.

Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland won the 100 butterfly breaking the old meet record with a new time of 58.74. Demerae Christianson earned a bronze while Dana Vollmer finished 8th in the final heat.

One race to watch tonight was the women's 50 backstroke. All competitors were under :30 and all within one second of each other. Japan's Aya Terakawa touched first in a 29.06.

Another battle went on later that evening in the men's 800 meter freestyle. Poland's Przemyslaw Stanczyk and Russia's Yuri Prilukov stayed within tenths of each other the whole race. In the end Stanczyk beat out Prilukov clocking in at 7:57.00 and 7:57.05. Justin Mortimer, USA, ended up 5th after swimming in the morning heats.

Germany went one two in the women's 100 freestyle with Petra Dallman, 55.35, and Annika Liebs, 55.97. Sarah Wanezek and Dana Vollmer, USA, finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

China's Hui Chi won the 200 IM in a 2:14.99 with American Caroline Bruce finishing 5th.

France won the final event of the evening, the men's 400 free relay with a 3:19.91. Great Britain was second, 3:20.27, and the USA third, 3:20.45.
