USA Nationals, Day 4: Lowe Is High Again, Completes Breaststroke Sweep With Solid Win in the 100

By Phillip Whitten

IRVINE, Calif., August 6. OKAY, class… Here’s our question of the day: What happens when a guy from the University of Texas – a guy who just happens to hold world records in the 100 and 200 breast and is reigning world champion in those events – decides not to swim at Nationals?

Answer: He is replaced by another Texas Longhorn.

In this case, what happened when Brendan Hansen decided to skip Nationals was that his place was immediately taken by Matt Lowe. Earlier Lowe had taken the 200 breast with a PR. Today he netted himself another one, splitting 28.94 at the 50 and blasting home in 32.70 for a 1:01.64.

Canada’s Mike Brown was second in 1:02.09 while Kevin Swander of Indiana was third in 1:02.39.
