USA Nationals, Day 2: Amanda Weir Romps in 100 Free

IRVINE, Calif., August 4. AMANDA Weir still holds national age group records in the 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 age groups. She was a 2004 Olympian. Tonight, for the first time, the 19-year-old sprinter from SwimAtlanta, won her first national title.

How did it feel? "It was so exciting," she said.

Weir wasted no time in asserting her dominance tonight, taking control of the 100-meter freestyle right off the dive. She turned first in 26.74 seconds, just .09 ahead of Tucson Ford’s Lacey Nymeyer but with the rest of the field at least half a second back.

On the second 50 she simply blew the field away, splitting 27.73 – more than a second faster than anyone else – to touch in a swift 54.47.

Nymeyer followed in 55.79 and Andrea Hupman, swimming in her first nationals, was third in 56.02. Kate Hoff finished fourth in 56.07.

Weir's time was just .01 off her personal best and was faster than she swam in Montreal. "It helps to be out in front," she said. "It takes the pressure off."
