World Champs: U.S. Men Bounced by Italy in Water Polo Action

MONTREAL, Canada, July 24. THE medal hopes of the United States men were dashed on Sunday, as the Americans dropped a 6-5 decision to Italy in the second round of the World Water Polo Championships. The Italians built a 4-2 lead in the third quarter and the U.S. never recovered. The United States will play either Romania or Germany in the 10th-place game.

American captain Tony Azevedo scored twice in the fourth quarter and Brandon Brooks made several key saves in goal. Adam Wright and Jesse Smith also scored for the U.S. While the men are out of the medal picture, the women are still in the hunt. The U.S. ladies are scheduled to play Australia on Monday in a quarterfinal-round match.
