British Squad Feeling Strong With World Champs Set to Start

MONTREAL, Canada, July 23. ONE day before the swimming portion of the World Championships begins, National Performance Director Bill Sweetenham expressed satisfaction with the British squad’s preparation for the event. Great Britain is sending 18 swimmers to the meet, with a handful of athletes considered medal favorites.

"We've had a very good preparation and the coaches have done an outstanding job with the athletes," said Sweetenham. "The team enjoyed a great camp in Loughborough where the squad applied the finishing touches. We dotted every I and crossed every T as we made sure nothing has been left to chance."

Among the headliners for Britain are Melanie Marshall and Caitlin McClatchey on the women’s side and David Davies for the men. Marshall is a contender for gold in the 200 freestyle while McClatchey is expected to be among the frontrunners in the 400 freestyle. As for Davies, the Olympic bronze medalist in the 1,500 free is a medal favorite in the 800 and 1,500 free events.
