World Championships: Despatie Adds to Medal Collection by Winning One-Meter Springboard Title

MONTREAL, Canada, July 22. MAKE it two global titles for Canada’s Alexandre Despatie. Following his winning effort at the World Championships in the three-meter springboard event on Tuesday, Despatie captured gold in the one-meter springboard competition on Thursday night. From Montreal, Despatie continued to give the hometown crowd much to cheer about.

Despatie led from the start and defeated a pair of former champions. Despatie packaged a score of 489.69, a total far superior than the 445.68 of China’s Xu Xiang. China also secured the bronze medal as Wang Feng tallied a score of 445.56. Xu was the defending champion while Wang was the champ from 2001. Finland’s Joona Puhakka finished fourth and Americans Jevon Tarantino and Chris Colwill were fifth and sixth, respectively.

Despatie was given a 10 on his fifth dive and routinely outscored his competition en route to the blowout. Despatie’s win in the one-meter discipline followed a 60-plus point triumph in the three-meter event. The Chinese have won medals in all six diving competitions contested to this point.
