Auburn, Georgia Meet President Bush at White House

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA, July 12. THE Auburn University men and the University of Georgia women spent Tuesday afternoon at the White House, greeted by President Bush on the South Lawn. The NCAA championship swimming programs were among a number of national-title programs invited to the nation’s capital. The teams took part in a photo session with the President.

For Auburn, the three-time defending NCAA champ, B.J. Jones presented President Bush with a handful of gifts, including an Auburn jacket with his name emblazoned on the back. Auburn also presented the President with a framed wall hanging that includes pictures of an eagle flying in front of an American flag and Auburn celebrating its national crown.

“This is a huge honor for our team,” said Jones, who met the President prior to the presentation. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thrill. It was a product of a lot of hard work, coaching expertise and recruiting. It was a nice reward to meet the leader of the free world and it was very inspiring. I was pretty floored to be able to make contact with him and I thanked him for allowing us to come. It was cool to shoot the breeze with the President and it is something I will never forget.”

“It was an honor having our team here,” Auburn Head Coach David Marsh said. “It was a unique and humbling experience. It was most impressive to see the genuine warmth of the President as he greeted the team. He even gave us a ‘War Eagle’ as he spent several minutes with us and he made us feel very welcome at the White House.”

While Auburn was welcomed to the White House for winning the NCAA men’s title, Georgia was invited for its triumph at the NCAA Women’s Championships. Last March, the Bulldogs won all five relays and earned Georgia’s fourth title in seven years.
