Carry, Marshall Are Scorching at British Last-Chance Qualifier

SWANSEA, Wales, June 17. HOT swimming was the norm Friday as British Swimming opened its last-chance qualifying meet for next month’s World Championships in Montreal. The competition is being held at the Wales National Pool, and was kicked off in stylish fashion by David Carry’s performance in the 400-meter freestyle.

Carry negotiated the eight-lap event in 3:48.96 to stamp his ticket to Montreal, and also established a Scottish record. On record pace at the midpoint of the race, Carry gave the British mark a push before falling just short. That standard is held by Paul Palmer at 3:48.02. Carry was followed to the wall by David Davies in 3:52.49.

While Carry earned qualification in the 400 free, Mel Marshall uncorked a sensational swim in the women’s 200 free and earned qualification in her pet event. Marshall, who will be a medal contender in Montreal, stopped the clock in 1:58.25. Jo Jackson claimed second in 2:00.06. Marshall’s time is the second-fastest in the world this year, trailing only the 1:57.92 of Italy’s Federica Pellegrini.

“I didn't feel that positive as I've hardly rested coming into the event tonight but I'm thrilled to be going to Montreal,” Marshall said. “I'm really excited about that swim. I missed out by the smallest of margins in March but now I've made it by the same kind of gap.”

Kate Haywood also earned a trip to Montreal in the 100 breaststroke, as she checked in at 1:08.28. She was joined as a breaststroke winner by Chris Cook, who snared top honors in the 50 distance (28.02). Haywood placed in front of Kirsty Balfour (1:11.55) and Cook topped Darren Mew (28.16).

Great Britain also qualified its women’s 800 free relay and 400 medley relay for the World Champs. Other victors, but failing to reach the Montreal standard, featured Mark Foster in the 50 butterfly (24.11), France’s Alena Popchanka in the 100 butterfly (59.49) and Katy Sexton in the 100 backstroke (1:02.60).
