CANBERRA, Australia, June 12. LEISEL Jones continued to stamp a strong claim on the 100-200 breaststroke double in Montreal next month, taking the 200 final this morning in an excellent 2:27.98. Jones went 1:07.73 in the two-lap race yesterday.

The format of this Grand Prix meet has been interesting with the prelims in the evening and finals swum the next morning, forcing the swimmers to produce a fast time in the morning to simulate the situation at World Champs.

Michael Klim (pictured) produced two sub 23-second swims in twenty minutes when he took out the 50 free in 22.81 from Eamon Sullivan (23.21) and Aussie champ Brett Hawke (23.25), then went under the mark again in a relay event giving him added confidence preparing for the freestyle sprints. Klim has already decided to skip the 100 fly at the Worlds, which he won at Nationals, to preserve his injury-ravaged frame.

Andrew Mewing took the 200 freestyle, clocking 1:50.95 from Pat Murphy (1:51.03). However, it was announced today that Grant Hackett would add this individual event to his program in Montreal.

World record-holder Jodie Henry had an easy win in the 100 free, clocking a very solid 55.09 (coming home in a fast 27.95). The other two Aussie flyers Libby Lenton (minor rib muscle injury) and Alice Mills (flu) missed the race.

Lara Carroll took the I.M. double, easily winning the 400 in a very solid 4:47.49 from Kiwi Helen Norfolk (4:54.86).

Jessica Schipper (2:10.02) beat teammate Felicity Galvez (2:11.51) in the 200 fly. Danni Miatke took the one-lap race in 27.22 (prelim: 27.03).

Jade Edmistone splashed to a win in the women’s 50 breast clocking, 31.47 while Brenton Rickard took the men’s 100 breast in 1:02.97 from Jim Piper (1:03.57).

Linda Mackenzie won the 400 freestyle in 4:14.67 from teens Haylee Reddaway (4:16.12) and Bronte Barratt (4:16.44). Mackenzie produced a strong performance over the weekend taking the 200-400-800 treble along with a second placing in the two-lap race.

Ethan Rolff took the dorsal treble, with a surprise win in the 50 in 26.21, over Matt Welsh (26.31), and then the 200 in a solid 2:01.43. Rolff is not part of the Aussie team for Montreal.

Canadian turned Aussie Kurtis MacGillivary won the 1500 free in 15:47.53.

New Zealander Corney Swanepoel took the fly sprint double adding the 100 in 54.00 from teammate Moss Burmester (54.39). As did Dean Kent, adding the 200m I.M. in 2:04.28 ahead of Aussie Adam Lucas (2:05.31). On the women’s side Hannah McLean added the 100 back to the deuce from yesterday, edging out Aussie champ Giaan Rooney 1:01.96 to 1:02.22.
