Speedo Grand Challenge Features Stellar Field

IRVINE, Calif., May 25. LED by Kaitlin Sandeno and Natalie Coughlin, a strong Olympic contingent will compete this weekend at the Speedo Grand Challenge. Held at the Woollett Aquatic Center, the meet is part of the Southern California Swim Series and will run from Friday through Sunday.

Sandeno and Coughlin highlight the Olympians expected to race, as preparation for this summer’s World Championships in Montreal continues. Sandeno and Coughlin are slotted to square off in the 200 individual medley while Jason Lezak is scheduled to swim the sprint freestyles. Larsen Jensen will be in action in the distance free events.

A strong international influence will also be present, as British Swimming’s National Team will be in action. Meanwhile, Alena Popchanka, an Olympian from Belarus, is entered in a number of events. The women’s 200 free could be one of the premier events of the weekend, as it includes Popchanka, Britain’s Mel Marshall and Coughlin.

In the men’s 100 breaststroke, James Gibson is the top speed. The Brit finished sixth in the event at the Athens Games and was the bronze medalist at the 2003 World Championships.
