Stewart Named as Head Man at Butler University

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 18. MAURICE Stewart, an assistant coach at Auburn University the past two years, has been hired to oversee the men’s and women’s programs at Butler University. Stewart’s hiring was announced Tuesday by John Parry, Butler’s Athletic Director.

Stewart was familiar with success at Auburn, as he was part of an NCAA championship program. Stewart aided the Tigers to men’s titles in 2004 and 2005 and helped the women capture an NCAA crown during the 2004 campaign. Stewart’s assistant-coaching duties at Auburn primarily included work in the butterfly and sprint freestyles, along with the dryland program.

“We believe that Maurice brings the right combination of experience and enthusiasm to our program here at Butler," Parry said. "With the university's new fitness center providing us with an on-campus practice facility in the near future and Maurice's leadership, we are excited about the direction of our swimming program."

Stewart is a 1996 graduate of the University of Kentucky and replaces R.J. Taylor, who was Butler’s interim head coach last season. Before transferring to Kentucky, Stewart helped Indian River Community College to the National Junior College Athletic Association championship in 1991. Stewart has also served as the head coach of Sugar Creek Swim Club in St. Louis.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the Butler men's and women's swimming program beginning with the 2005-06 season," Stewart said. "I am confident that the experience I bring from Auburn University, as well as the support I anticipate from the Butler Athletic Department, will help me create a bright future for Butler student-athletes and successfully guide them to academic and swimming excellence."
