Brazilian Pair Cited for Doping Violations

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, May 10. ACCORDING to releases on the FINA Web site, two Brazilian swimmers have tested positive for banned substances during out-of-competition checks. The athletes who have tested positive are Danilo Carrega and Leonardo Costa.

According to the site, INRS, a WADA-accredited laboratory, reported that Carrega tested positive for Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. The test was conducted on March 9. Effective May 2, Carrega was provisionally suspended until a hearing in front of the FINA Doping Panel can be held after the test of a B-sample.

In another decision, the FINA Doping Panel suspended Costa for two years for a positive test of stanozolol. Costa was tested on November 17, 2004 and his suspension began December 27, before the panel held its hearing. Costa can appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
