Pereira Leads Brazilian Contingent for World Champs

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, May 10. LED by Thiago Pereira, Brazil will send 12 swimmers to this summer’s World Championships in Montreal. Pereira is the unquestioned headliner of the group and should be in the medal mix in each of the individual medley events.

At last summer’s Olympic Games in Athens, Pereira claimed a fifth-place showing in the 200 I.M., as he clocked 2:00.11. That time was 1.31 seconds of the bronze-medal swim George Bovell. Pereira also placed 17th in the 400 I.M., where he was timed in 4:22.06.

Aside from Pereira, Gabe Mangabeira should make some noise in Montreal, especially with the way he performed in Athens. A University of Florida product, Mangabeira took sixth in the 100 butterfly. Meanwhile, Fernando Scherer is coming off an 11th-place swim at the Olympics in the 50 freestyle.

The remainder of Brazilian squad for the World Champs includes: Felipe May Araujo, Kaio Marcio de Almeida, Paula Baracho, Mariana Brochado, Flavia Delaroli, Monique Fereira, Rebeca Gusmao, Joanna Maranhao and Fabiola Molina.
