Louisiana-Monroe Drops Ax on Swimming and Diving Program

MONROE, La., May 2. THE end has arrived for the swimming and diving program at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The program will be dropped at the end of this school year while the university intends to add women’s golf for the 2005-06 season.

The move to eliminate the swimming program and add women’s golf leaves the school with 16 varsity athletic programs, seven among men and nine for women. Eleven athletes are affected by the decision to drop swimming and diving – six men and five women – and they will be given their release to pursue collegiate careers at other universities.

A member of the Sun Belt Conference, Louisiana-Monroe has told the swimmers that they will remain on scholarship for the 2005-06 season, provided they stay at the school.

"We are conducting an ongoing review of the athletics department," said Louisiana-Monroe Director of Athletics Bobby Staub. "From a strategic standpoint, we feel that this better aligns us with other regional Division I institutions. This move will also allow us to earmark additional resources to strengthen our women's programs in the future."
