Phelps, Coughlin Highlight Counsilman Classic Entrants

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 25. SIMILAR to a few weeks back, when the United States World Championship Trials were held in the city, Indianapolis will be a hot spot for the swimming community in June.

The second annual FINIS Counsilman Classic is scheduled to be held June 10-12 at the IUPUI Natatorium, site of numerous Olympic Trials in the past. And, the meet will feature Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin, who combined to win 13 medals at last summer’s Athens Olympics. Tickets for the event went on sale Monday.

Sponsored by Central Indiana Aquatics, the competition is named in honor of Doc Counsilman, the former Indiana University coach who earned legendary status for his contributions to swimming. The Counsilman Classic is one of four USA Swimming Grand Prix events.

During his last trip to the IUPUI Natatorium, Phelps took first place in five events at the World Champs Trials. Aside from winning the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle events, Phelps won the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. Coughlin, meanwhile, qualified for Montreal in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.
