Matsuda Wins a Pair at Japanese World Champs Trials

By Hideki Mochizuki

YOKOHAMA, Japan, April 22. THE second day of the Japanese World Championship Trials, like the first, didn't produce any national records. But, a handful of solid times have been recorded.

Takeshi Matsuda provided one of the biggest highlights during Friday’s action, as he prevailed in the 200-meter butterfly in 1:56.28. Matsuda could be a medal contender at this summer’s World Champs in Montreal. Prior to winning the 200 fly, Matsuda took first place in the 1,500 freestyle, although his time of 15:18.23 wasn’t quick enough to meet the Montreal qualifying standard.

In the women’s 100 backstroke, Hanae Ito edged Reiko Nakamura with a winning mark and personal best of 1:01.15. Nakamura wasn’t far behind in 1:01.35. The men’s 100 back, meanwhile, went to Tomomi Morita, who checked in with a solid effort of 54.36. In Athens last summer, Morita took home Olympic bronze.

Other victories from the second night of finals were registered by Hidemasa Sano in the 400 individual medley, where he clocked 4:16.60, and Yuko Nakanishi in the women’s 200 fly. Nakanishi touched the wall in a quality time of 2:08.28, ahead of the 2:10.11 turned in by Yurie Yano. In the 200 freestyle races, Ai Shibata (1:59.57) and Yukihiro Okumura (1:48.97) were victorious. Shibata won the 400 free on the opening night.
