Ziegler Keeps Adding Records to Resume

NORMAL, Ill., April 18. THE records keep flowing in for Kate Ziegler. This time around, the standards were achieved in a pair of rarely contested distances.

Taking part in the National Internet Distance Meet in Illinois, Ziegler (The Fish) uncorked record-breaking swims in the 3,000-yard freestyle and the 5,000-yard freestyle. The Saturday morning swims were part of a weekend distance-training session between The Fish and the BNY Waves.

In tackling the 5,000-yard distance, Ziegler established a women’s open record with a time of 50:05.00, lowering the former mark of 52.00.55, set by Elizabeth Lavelle. At the 3,000-yard point, Ziegler’s time of 29:49.89 lowered the NAG record in the 16-year-old classification, which was set at 30:31.03 in 1986 by Julie Martin.

Earlier this month, Ziegler captured titles in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles at the United States World Championship Trials. In Montreal this summer, she’s expected to contend for a podium position at the World Champs. Last February, Ziegler set an American record in the short-course version of the 800 free and, in recent months, took down NAG records in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles.

Ziegler wasn’t the only Fish swimmer to take down an NAG record, as Chloe Sutton clocked 30:23.55 in the 3,000 free to break the 1998 record of Anna Stohl (30:47.25). Meanwhile, the Waves’ Emily Hanson also went under the former 16-year-old mark in the 3,000 free, as she touched in 30:23.78.
