Coventry is College Swimming’s Female Athlete of the Year

AUBURN, Ala., April 5. TWO weeks removed from a splendid showing at the NCAA Championships, Auburn University's Kirsty Coventry has been named college swimming's top female in a vote of more than 1,000 member schools.

At the NCAA Championships last month, Coventry collected three titles, as she won the 200 backstroke and the 200 and 400 individual medley events. Her time in the 200 back (1:50.54) was the second-fastest in NCAA history.

In winning the award, Coventry prevailed over Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce and Mary DeScenza and Stanford's Caroline Joyce. Those three women won two individual events each at the NCAA Champs.

In being named the top collegiate swimmer, Coventry will be presented with the Honda Award. She's also now a candidate for the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the top woman in NCAA athletics.

Last summer, Coventry enjoyed major success at the Athens Olympics, where she won gold in the 200 backstroke, silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 200 individual medley.
