INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 3. TWO weeks ago, they combined their efforts to lead Georgia to the NCAA team title. Sunday night, Kara Lynn Joyce and Amanda Weir dominated the field in the 50 freestyle.

The top qualifiers from the morning preliminaries, Joyce and Weir held their positions during the championship final and punched tickets for July's World Champs. Their efforts also bode well for the 100 free and U.S. relay hopes.

America's top sprinter, Joyce had little trouble pulling away from the competition and hit the wall in 25.17. While the effort was off her 25.00 swim from the Olympics, the performance was solid considering the amount of action Joyce has seen in the last month.

In claiming the second slot, Weir touched the wall a fraction ahead of Sarah Wanezek, going 25.52 to a 25.53 of Wanezek. Maritza Correia touched in fourth place (25.84) and Lacey Nymeyer was fifth in 25.88.

“I think that’s the first time since the NCAAs that I’ve seen Kara Lynn that relaxed,” said Jack Bauerle, the Georgia coach and the head man of the U.S. women for World Champs. “(Joyce and Weir) could have been a little faster off the blocks, but they kept their wits about them and had a good finish. They both had pretty fast times, and we're thankful they’re on the team, but we can be a little faster, and we need to be (faster) the way the Aussie girls are racing right now. The way they raced tonight, I couldn’t be prouder. Those two are good for each other.”
