INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, April 1. IT was billed as a return to yesteryear, the glory days when Brendan and Ed – Hansen and Moses, that is – ruled the world of breaststroke.

After this morning’s prelims, that’s just the way it shaped up with Hansen qualifying first and Moses second with the only 1:01s in a strong field. Hansen, the world record-holder at 59.30 and the favorite tonight, appeared to be ready to test the one-minute barrier

Moses, after disappointing swims at last year’s Olympic Trials, was set to challenge the world record-holder, but his sluggish second 50 in prelims was worrisome.

Hansen took command at the start, turning in 28.33 seconds with Moses (28.70) and Mark Gangloff (28.72), who was the surprise runner-up at the 2004 Olympic Trials, half a stroke behind.

Coming home, Hansen stretched his lead, touching in 1:00.13. Gangloff stayed strong, fighting Moses off, then pulling away to finish second in 1:01.36. Indiana’s Kevin Swander finished third as Moses, inexplicably, faded to fifth.
