INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, April 1. A LITTLE over a year ago, Katie Hoff burst onto the world swimming stage, a precocious still-13 year-old, eager to take on the world.

Though she swam superbly at the Olympic Trials and the Games themselves, her inexperience showed: brilliant in flashes, she didn’t quite live up to hyperbolic expectations, and she came home without a medal, but a much wiser young woman.

Now Katie is all of 15 years old, more poised and experienced but still eager to take on all comers. And this time she’s got the whole package.

The form sheets saw the women’s 200 IM as a two-woman battle pitting the teenage upstart – that’s Hoff – against the grizzled veteran, 22 year-old Kaitlin Sandeno. But Kaitlin’s been enjoying her post-Olympic glow after winning gold, silver and bronze in Athens, and did not appear ready to take on the hungry youngster. Meanwhile, overlooked by many (but not by us), was Arizona’s Whitney Myers, who has quietly been making her presence felt in several events including the 200 IM.

Remember the name – Whitney Myers – she’s only begun to blossom.

Hoff took the 50-meter fly leg out in a controlled 28.83, which put her three-tenths ahead of Sandeno and half a second in front of Myers.

The North Baltimore ace – female variety – extended her lead on the backstroke, turning in 1:02.17 – ahead of American record pace – with Sandeno dropping to 1:02.65 and Myers staying in contact at 1:03.04.

Then Hoff unloaded a major surprise, crushing her challengers with a 37.62 second breaststroke leg to turn in1:39.79. Meanwhile Myers, known for her fly and backstroke, split 39.41 to move ahead of Sandeno. Kristen Caverly, in fourth until the final turn, made her bid, splitting 38.92 to overtake the struggling Sandeno at the 150-mark.

It was all Hoff on the homestretch, as she took it into the wall in 31.45 seconds to light up the scoreboard at 2:11.24, half a second under Amanda Beard’s American record of 2:11.70 that won silver in Athens. Myers held on to take second in 2:14.19 ahead of Sandeno (2:14.32) and Caverly (2:14.79)
