Baker Breaks New Zealand Record in 50 Breast

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, April 1. AS the New Zealand Swimming Championships near conclusion, several more solid swims were registered in the Southern Hemisphere, including a national record by Zoe Baker.

Formerly of Great Britain, Baker recently became eligible to compete for New Zealand and clocked 31.21 in the prelims of the 50-meter breast for a national record. That swim qualified Baker for the World Championships in Montreal and was followed by a semifinal effort of 31.95.

A number of championships were decided on the fourth day of competition, as Corney Swanepoel won the men's 50 butterfly (24.06) and Dean Kent took top honors in the men's 100 breast with a mark of 1:04.50. Meanwhile, Moss Burmester won the men's 200 free in 1:51.46.

On the women's side, titles went to Georgina Toomey in the 50 fly (27.42), Hannah McLean in the 100 backstroke (1:02.39) and Liz Van Welie in the 200 butterfly (2:18.33).
