NCAA Div. I Women, Day One Finals: Coventry Wins 200 IM with Second-Fastest Time Ever

By Dan Mihalik

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 17. TRIPLE Olympic medalist Kirsty Coventry of Auburn flexed her muscles by defeating the 200 individual medley field while turning in the second fastest performance of all time.

Her time of 1:54.37 was good enough to defeat and hold off Arizona’s Whitney Myers, by over two seconds. Myers led the first leg of the 200 IM, but Coventry, who is the Olympic champion in the 200 backstroke, took the lead during the backstroke leg and never looked back.

Caroline Bruce of Stanford had a solid race, finishing in third place. After the morning session, she was seeded fourth, but moved ahead of Emily Kukors of Auburn in the finals. Kukors finished in fourth place, ahead of Florida’s Leah Retrum.

The Georgia duo of Mary Descenza and Tricia Harm finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Texas A&M’s Danielle Townsend finished in eighth place.
